Invitation to Participate (ITP)

Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School (BVEOES) is a member of Community Achieves, a district-led initiative that supports the development of full-service community schools through infrastructure and technical assistance within a collective impact framework.

The mission of Community Achieves is to design full-service community schools through a framework that strategically aligns resources to foster student success. The results focused partnership between parents, the community, and schools will personalize learning for students and lead to stronger families and healthier communities.

The vision of Community Achieves is to have strong, safe, successful community schools to promote and support student success with all resources and programs in alignment.

In 2014, Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School's Community Achieves Team examined school and community data to develop a detailed needs assessment. They then identified a specific outcome, based on data and identified needs, for each Community Achieves pillar to serve as a focus for all partnerships and activities. Partners that respond to this ITP will be invited to a BUENA VISTA PARTNER NETWORK MEETING where they will have the opportunity to plan collaboratively with school personnel and other school partners. PARENT/FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

Desired Outcomes:

Families actively involved in children's education

Families provide strategic, proactive solutions in partnership with the school

While BVEOES has substantially high participation (>300 students, families) at the six Student Showcases, with an enrollment of almost 400 students, the showcases strive to reach more families.  In 2013-14, Gradespeed accounts, which are used by families to monitor student progress in classwork, were setup for less than 10% of the students.

The BVEOES PTA has 10 members, which meet regularly before the Student Showcases. However, based on data from the 2014 Tell TN survey, only 50% of the faculty and staff at BVEOES agree "parents/guardians support teachers, contributing to their success with students"; 52% agree that "parents are influential decision makers in the school."

BVEOES hosts SIX 1.5 hour Student Showcases per year, during which over 300 students, families, and community members share dinner, celebrate student achievement, and generally build family and community engagement.  These workshops are funded through 2014-15.  Prior to each Student Showcase, the PTA has a more structured meeting.  BVEOES is inviting community individuals and organizations to become involved with the PTA to build relationships with the school, develop strategic plans for ongoing and future support, and provide educational and informational workshops for parents to nurture family engagement and stronger partnerships between families and the school.

COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS

Desired outcome:

Students maintain academic success

Why do we need your help?

BVEOES' most recent TCAP scores show a need to increase the focus on the academic success of students.  The percent of students proficient or advanced per subject are as follows

  • 20% in Math
  • 15% in Reading/ELA
  • 15% in Science
  • 62% in Social Sciences

Pearl-Cohn High School is the feeder school for BVEOES students.  Pearl-Cohn students were awarded just over $2.7 million in scholarships, the majority of which are represented by the HOPE Scholarship fund, which requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a 21 on the ACT Comp.

BVEOES offers afterschool tutoring with funding from a 21st Community Learning Centers grant.  BVEOES is inviting individuals and organizations to participate intutoring and mentoring activities during the afterschool period (4-5:30).  Individuals and organizations should be able to devote a certain amount of time on a continuous basis for some or all of the months of October 2014 to April 2015.  BVEOES will work with volunteers to develop schedules on an individual basis.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Desired outcome:

Students are physically capable to enter and participate in school

Why do we need your help?

How can you help?

Based on Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments conducted by MNPS Coordinated School Health, 33% of the BVEOES students are considered overweight or obese

BVEOES is in the beginning stages of developing a community garden through several established partnerships.  BVEOES is seeking additional organizations and individuals to provide all types of resource donations in support of the community garden as it develops, grows, and becomes sustainable.

SOCIAL SERVICES

Desired outcome:

Food security and basic clothing needs of families and students are met

Students and families have access to the range of public services relevant to their needs

Why do we need your help?

How can you help?

As indicated by the percentage of students eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch in 2013-14, 98% of the BVEOES families experience poverty and have needs for various public services.

BVEOES currently partners with Second Harvest Food Bank to provide 175 backpacks of food for students and families.  However, BVEOES has a higher need and is inviting organizations to provide additional food for their students and families.  Additionally, Alliance Nashville partners with BVEOES to provide uniforms to students, but additional clothing resources are needed.
