This section refers to resource and services to support the student’s new role as a parent and to maximize the healthy development of the infant.  The organizations and programs in this section provide support – education, health services, social services resources, etc. – through the infant’s first year of life and beyond.

HUGS Program (Metro Public Health Department)

Description:       HUGS (Help Us Grow Successfully) is a home visiting case management program for pregnant teens, women, infants and children up through age 5 years. Services are offered by registered nurses and program specialists. Services include on-going education concerning pregnancy, postpartum care, family planning, newborn care, breastfeeding, safety issues, and family wellness. Case managers also educate and assist clients with obtaining available resources and make appropriate referrals to help the client build self-reliance skills.

Cost:                      HUGS is a free service to the client.

Description:          These schools are for students ages 17-21, and they offer a high school diploma and flexible hours to accommodate student schedules. Students can attend classes in the morning, afternoon or evening.

Eligibility:               Students who are between the ages of 17 and 21;

                                Students with at least 14 ½ credits;

                                Students who dropped out their senior year;

                                Students who are not slated to graduate on time in the school year; and

                                Students who dropped out the second semester of their junior year.

 

Healthy Beginnings

Description:       The Healthy Start Program conducts home visitation services for first-time mothers of any age (prenatal or postpartum) and their babies to provide supportive services to new moms which includes: Education on parenting skills, baby's growth & development, child safety, promotion of regular medical care, and disease prevention. Also, resources, referrals, and other information and assistance is provided as needed to help lessen the burden of new parenthood.

Hours:                  Monday-Friday from 8 to 4:30p.m.

Cost:                      Services are provided free to the clients.

Monroe Carell Jr Hospital at Vanderbilt – Primary Care Clinic

Description:       We are a fully staffed, full-time pediatric clinic located at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. We are staffed by ~60 resident pediatricians. We offer full pediatric care for newborns through 18 years. We do routine checkups and immunizations and se children for sick visits as well. Our clinic has a full-time social worker who can help new moms get connected with many local resources, WIC program for nutrition help, and TennCare or other insurance plans. We have a social worker in our clinic, and we have a full-time Spanish interpreter. We have access to interpreters in many other languages as well.

Tennessee Voices for Children

Description:       We provide information and training to parents and child care provider on the following topics: Promoting Positive Change, Social-Emotional Teaching Strategies, Young Children with Challenging Behavior, Early Screening Project, and Positive Parenting. Our program addresses needs associated with serious behavioral, developmental, and environmental barriers to effective learning. Special emphasis is placed on those children at imminent risk of being dismissed from their child care setting. Other TVC programs offer training to parents on the various child serving systems in Tennessee, Being an Effective Advocate for Your Child, and Working with Schools during Key Academic Transitions.

Location:             Training is provided at various locations and times that are convenient for parents.

Description:       www.kidcentraltn.com is a one-stop shop for information about children's health, education, development, and support.  The website pulls content from across state departments, making it easier for families to find what they need.  The website includes early childhood articles about Car Seat Requirements, Safe Sleep, and the Importance of Reading.  The website includes a services directory with programs like WIC, TennCare, CoverKids, Childcare Certificates, Parenting Classes, Home Visiting, Imagination Library, Early Childhood Intervention Services, Student Assistance, and Adolescent Substance Abuse Programs.  In the My Profile section, families can create their own online resource book and see unique developmental milestones based on their child's age.  kidcentraltn.com also has Facebook and Twitter accounts to engage users through social media channels.

Eligibility:           For families and professionals who work with families.  The website is available to anyone.

Description:        The CCR&R matches parents seeking child care with child care providers. Whether you are a parent seeking child care resources, a child care provider seeking help with your program, an employer trying to assist parents in your organization, or a community organization involved with children, we look forward to helping you obtain the information you need.

 

We also administer the ACCYN grant that assists military families in locating child care as well as applying for the subsidy program.

 

Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee

Description:        Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee (PCAT) offers resources, training, parent coaching, empowerment, and home visitation programs to help parents and caregivers build healthy, nurturing parenting skills and to give them the essential tools necessary to advocate for their children. PCAT’s Parent Helpline is a 24/7, toll-free number for supportive listening, information, and referrals.

Eligibility:            Eligibility varies depending on program. PCAT's Healthy Families Tennessee program is specifically designed for first-time parents and for parents 21 years of age and younger.

 

Metro Public Health Department Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Program

Description:        The Metro Public Health Department Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Program (FIMR) serves to ensure all babies are born healthy and reach their full potential. The FIMR Program provides Safe Sleep education to parents and caregivers to ensure babies have safe sleep environments and parents and caregivers reduce the risks of sleep-related infant deaths in Davidson County.

Eligibility:             Must be residents of Davidson County.

Description:         The purpose of Welcome Baby is to screen for child risks for infant mortality at the time of the child's birth, provide timely referrals to address their needs, connect children and families with appropriate services in the community and to provide utilization of community resources.

Metro Public Health Department's Tobacco Prevention Program

Description: The Tobacco Prevention Program offers resources to residents of Davidson County, Nashville around reducing the exposure of second and third hand smoke, reducing the initiation of tobacco use and referrals to the Quitline for cessation. The program will offer the Baby and Me Tobacco Free program to encourage pregnant women to quit smoking. The program is offers counseling sessions on how to quit smoking during pregnancy. If the mother remains smoke free, she will receive an incentive for the first 12 months of the child's life.

Neighborhood Health Integrated Health Services

Description          Neighborhood Health’s behavioral health providers address health concerns related to social, mental and emotional health and behaviors connected to these concerns.  Providers are skilled at addressing anything from difficulty changing life behaviors to remain physically health to diagnosable mental illness and substance misuse issues. 

Cost:                     Covered by most insurances including TN Care and sliding scale and payment arrangements can be made for those without insurance.
