This section refers to resources and services to support the student immediately following the birth or end of pregnancy and the 6 weeks after the delivery or end of pregnancy.  The organizations listed in this section provide support – education, health services, social services resources, etc. – through birth to 6 weeks after the end of pregnancy.

Exchange Club Family Center parenting education classes

Description:       Parent education classes for pregnant or parenting teens and adults. These interactive classes allow parents or expecting parents to come together to share experiences and discuss a variety of topics including learning your parenting style, child development, understanding and managing children's behavior, boosting self-esteem, positive communication, child safety, stress management, and much more. Classes are taught by experienced mental health professionals. Parenting classes are eight weeks, 1 and ½ hours in length and teens may begin the class at any time as sessions are offered weekly. The program cost is based on income.

HUGS Program (Metro Public Health Department)

Description:       HUGS (Help Us Grow Successfully) is a home visiting case management program for pregnant teens, women, infants and children up through age 5 years. Services are offered by registered nurses and program specialists. Services include on-going education concerning pregnancy, postpartum care, family planning, newborn care, breastfeeding, safety issues, and family wellness. Case managers also educate and assist clients with obtaining available resources and make appropriate referrals to help the client build self-reliance skills.

Cost:                     HUGS is a free service to the client.

Description:       www.kidcentraltn.com is a one-stop shop for information about children's health, education, development, and support.  The website pulls content from across state departments, making it easier for families to find what they need.  The website includes early childhood articles about Car Seat Requirements, Safe Sleep, and the Importance of Reading.  The website includes a services directory with programs like WIC, TennCare, CoverKids, Childcare Certificates, Parenting Classes, Home Visiting, Imagination Library, Early Childhood Intervention Services, Student Assistance, and Adolescent Substance Abuse Programs.  In the My Profile section, families can create their own online resource book and see unique developmental milestones based on their child's age.  kidcentraltn.com also has Facebook and Twitter accounts to engage users through social media channels.

Cost:                    Services are provided free to the clients.

Eligibility:             For families and professionals who work with families.  The website is available to anyone.

Metro Public Health Department

Description:       The mission of the family planning program is to prevent unintended pregnancy and improve pregnancy planning and spacing. Family Planning services include:

  • Physical exam (including a medical history, height/weight, and blood pressure)
  • Family Planning counseling and education--including information on all contraceptive methods and safe sex practices.
  • Pregnancy testing
  • STD and HIV testing
  • Birth Control (such as abstinence, natural family planning, condoms, birth control pills, patch, ring, injections, IUDs, and implants)
  • Pre-conception exams (making yourself as healthy as possibly before getting pregnant)
  • Emergency contraception or the "morning-after pill"

Neighborhood Health Post-Partum Care

Description:       Neighborhood Health helps women of all ages stay healthy and provides a full range of women's healthcare including Family Planning, Screening for breast and cervical cancer and Prenatal Care and Post-Partum Care. We also provide care for you and your infant after delivery.

Cost: Covered by most insurances including TN Care and sliding scale and payment arrangements can be made for those without insurance.
