WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

8 Ways To Change Climate, Develop Culture and Build Community

Don Breedwell, MNPS

The classroom is a micro-environment where the smallest of temperature changes impacts the climate. The smallest shift in climate change affects the development of the culture(s). Together these systems can either build a great long lasting community or completely devastate the entire eco-system.

We will explore eight effective principles which will create climate positive change, create safe and inclusive settings, and build the foundations for strong and vibrant communities where students, teachers and parents can experience realistic, cooperative learning, group cohesion, respect and mutual trust.

Critical Ingredients for SEL-Program Implementation

Micela Leis, University of Virginia Social Development Lab

Principals and teachers face many challenges trying to initiate and sustain SEL efforts in their schools. Too little time, too little money, too little support are just a few of the challenges we face in implementing new programs. Unfortunately, students can't benefit from interventions unless they are implemented well. Our research team at the University of Virginia, led by Dr. Rimm-Kaufman, has been conducting research on SEL programs and how principals and teachers can work together as a team toward school-wide implementation of SEL. Workshop participants will receive a school-wide planning framework and checklist to use in their future work.

We will walk through the five core competencies and explore how direct instruction looks in the classroom for each of those areas.  Role playing will be included.  The intervention class that was implemented at JT Moore for nine weeks between January and March 2015 saw a 60% reduction in behavior referrals for participating students.

Helping Traumatized Children Learn: A Tool Kit for Educators (2 hours)

This can interfere with their ability to process information and maintain control over behaviors and emotions.

Participants of this workshop can expect to learn:

1. The nature of trauma: definition, symptoms and what that looks like in the classroom

The increasing diversity of Metro Nashville Public Schools requires an emphasis on social emotional learning and culturally responsive teaching. However, many schools struggle with institutionalizing these concepts to create a school culture that is anti-bias. Working together, a group of parent-leaders, from several community-based nonprofits in Nashville, created the Diverse Family Advisory Board to help school environments create a culture that honored the "intersectionality" of identities of their children. This workshop is facilitated by parent-leaders. It summarizes the work of the Diverse Family Advisory Board and trains participants on how to facilitate a SEL and CRT programming in their schools.
